Success story: Arctic mesocosms in Svalbard regulated by M-Duino 42+ PLCs

Success story of FACE-IT in Ny-Ålesund, in the Svalbard archipelago (Norway). Twelve outdoor mesocosms hold four water conditions: control conditions and three scenarios for the year 2100 (RCP 4.5, RCP 8.5 warming only and RCP 8.5 fjord). Industrial Shields M-Duino 42+ PLCs regulate three mesocosms each, with a 3-way temperature valve and a 2-way fresh water valve per tank on analog signals, and read temperature, salinity and turbidity sensors on an RS-485 bus. The master PLC logs the data on a µSD card, and the PLCs talk WebSocket to a C# application on the control computer.

The PDF covers the challenge, the three loops (regulate, measure, supervise), the system architecture with the signal list, real photos from the site and the hardware used. Interactive version: Arctic mesocosm success story online.
