M-Duino vs Ardbox: which one fits your project?

Both run on the Arduino IDE. Compare the full range, from compact Ardbox controllers to the highest I/O M-Duino models, by price, I/O count and whether you need to switch loads directly.

Prices shown are list prices at time of publishing and may change. All M-Duino models include onboard Ethernet, RS-485 and RS-232 as standard; Ardbox does not. For direct load switching without an external relay module, look at the Relay variants: Ardbox Relay, M-Duino 19R, 38AR, 38R and 57R.

Where Arduino PLC runs

Energy: solar and wind monitoring

Arduino PLC units collect and relay operating data from solar and wind installations, including work carried out with ENEL. The controllers sit close to the equipment, reading sensor data and communicating it over standard industrial protocols.

Water: utility and municipal monitoring

In water management, Arduino PLC has been deployed for monitoring and control applications, including work with FEDA Andorra, alongside other municipal and utility installations.

EV charging infrastructure

An EV charging project in India uses Arduino PLC to manage charging point logic and communication, taking advantage of the open Arduino IDE to adapt the control logic to local requirements.

Retrofit: data acquisition on legacy machines

On machines with no data output at all, an Arduino PLC is added as a retrofit data acquisition layer, reading existing sensors or adding new ones, without replacing the machine's original control system.

Need built-in WiFi or Linux instead?

M-Duino and Ardbox run on the Arduino IDE, with communications added through expansion modules. If your project needs native WiFi and Bluetooth without extra hardware, or a Linux environment for Node-RED, SCADA or heavier local computing, two other families in our range cover that directly.

ESP32 PLC

Compact, native WiFi and Bluetooth LE, no additional communication module needed. Built for IIoT edge nodes.

Raspberry PLC

Runs Linux natively, with Node-RED, SCADA and local compute capacity beyond what a microcontroller-based PLC offers.

Frequently asked questions

Is Arduino suitable for industrial PLC applications?

Yes. Industrial Shields builds Arduino PLC controllers with DIN rail mounting, optoisolated I/O and industrial communication protocols such as RS-485 and Ethernet, adapting the Arduino ecosystem to industrial requirements rather than using a bare development board.

What's the difference between M-Duino and Ardbox?

M-Duino is based on Arduino Mega and includes onboard Ethernet, with a higher I/O count on larger models. Ardbox is based on Arduino Leonardo, in a more compact format, available in an Analog variant with PWM and analog outputs or a Relay variant for direct load switching, without onboard Ethernet.

Can I program it with the standard Arduino IDE?

Yes. Both families are programmed with the standard Arduino IDE, using the Industrial Shields board package to map the industrial I/O pins to Arduino pin names.

What industrial protocols does it support?

RS-485 (Modbus RTU) and RS-232 are standard across the range. M-Duino adds onboard Ethernet for Modbus TCP. Optional modules extend connectivity to LoRa, GPRS, DALI and WiFi & BLE depending on the model.

Can it replace a legacy industrial controller?

In many retrofit cases, yes. Arduino PLC connects to existing sensors and actuators through standard I/O and communication protocols, and can run alongside or in place of a legacy controller, depending on the scope of the project.
