Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between relay, analog and digital outputs?
Relay outputs are switching contacts for higher-voltage loads. Check each datasheet for the ratings. Analog outputs (0 to 10 Vdc) control variable devices such as drives and proportional valves, and can also work as digital or PWM outputs. Digital isolated outputs (5 to 24 Vdc) switch actuators and signals.
What is the difference between M-Duino and ESP32 PLC?
M-Duino is based on Arduino Mega 2560 and includes Ethernet. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth version is also available. ESP32 PLC is based on ESP32 and includes Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as standard.
Do Ardbox PLCs support Ethernet?
No. Ardbox Analog and Relay are based on Arduino Leonardo, and Ardbox Q on Arduino UNO Q. Ardbox Q includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and Ardbox Analog and Relay are also available in a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth version. For Ethernet, choose M-Duino, ESP32 PLC or Raspberry PLC.
Can I find a PLC with both relay and analog outputs?
Yes. Models with R in their name, such as 19R, 38R, 38AR and 57R, combine relays and analog outputs. Select both Relay and Analog in Output Types to filter for them.
What programming language do these PLCs use?
Arduino and ESP32 PLCs are programmed with the Arduino IDE. Raspberry PLC runs Linux on a Raspberry Pi, so you can use tools such as Python or Node-RED. Ardbox Q combines both: Arduino IDE and Arduino App Lab for control, and Python, Node-RED or Docker on Linux.
Are these PLCs suitable for industrial environments?
Yes. Industrial Shields PLCs are CE marked and use 12 to 24 Vdc power. M-Duino 21, 42 and 58 also carry the ETL mark. Operating temperature depends on the family: 0 to 60 °C for Ardbox and M-Duino, 0 to 50 °C for Raspberry PLC, and -20 to 70 °C for the ESP32 PLC family.
