The RS-232 pins of M-duino are only Rx-Tx, but must of the commercial devices with RS-232 port uses a D-sub9 pin, and (According to Mr. Google and Mrs Wikipedia) the RS-232 standard is supposed to use more pins besides Rx-Tx (DCD, DTR, DSR, RTS...).

If I only use the Rx, Tx and Gnd pins, should the communication work anyway?

How you say, the RS-2232 satandar uses more pins besides Rx / Tx but they are mean to work as control pins. You can perfectly connect our Industrial PLCs with other devices using the RS-232 communication only using the Rx and Tx and the common Ground.

You can check the following blogs for knowing more about using RS-232 communication on our devices:

I hope I have been helpful
